Van der Vlist Logistics (VLS) find that their clients have various factors that influence the decision behind their transport orders. For many, costs are the main concern, for others the transport time and for some CO2 reduction. As an option, VLS are offering and arranging more and more transports by barge.
A recent order involved a consignment of 7 large mining dump-trucks that needed moving from the Van der Vlist Terminal Moerdijk (VTM) to Antwerp and Zeebrugge. The 70 ton machines measuring almost 6 metres wide were moved using a pontoon with a fixed ramp. This method significantly reduces the loading time as the pontoon could be positioned at the VTM Ro-Ro quay. The dump trucks were loaded early morning at VTM and unloaded in the afternoon. Due to the short distance of this transport, the pontoon method was both the quickest and most cost effective; using the inland waterways avoided the restrictions on road transport and also avoided the need for road permits and escorts.
VLS always look at the barge and pontoon option for all heavy and oversized movements throughout Europe and offer this as an alternative or an accompaniment to the road transport offer. This gives the client a choice that allows them to balance cost with transit time. To find out how Van der Vlist Logistics can help you, please call +31-184-606600 or email info@vandervlist.com
