In 2008, Manitou Group THE Material Handling Company, purchased the US company Gehl. The buyout helped to expand the company portfolio beyond the Manitou branded telehandlers and forklifts to include Gehl and Mustang skid steer loaders, articulated loaders and track loaders.
To assist with the distribution of these products into Europe, Manitou required a centralized solution. To facilitate this they set up the subsidiary MILE in 2011 as the European distribution arm of the business. To enhance the business further, a third party logistics provider was also required to offer assembly, modification, PDI and distribution services. After a market study, Van der Vlist was chosen as the sole supplier for this operation for a number of reasons. Van der Vlist has natural expertise in the handling & distribution of compact equipment and coupled with the first class location facility and value added services available in Zeebrugge Belgium, Van der Vlist was the natural choice for MILE who are also registered as a Belgian company.
Pascal Pannier, MD of the Zeebrugge facility says “The first machines arrived at Van der Vlist Belgium in July 2011, this was the beginning of a very important phase for this Van der Vlist group subsidiary. From the outset, the workload was steady and it was clear that this was to become a fast growing operation. For the first half year of operations in 2011 400 units were shipped via the new distribution solution. For 2012, the estimated total for the year will be about 1500 units! The solution that Van der Vlist is providing consists of storage, customs formalities and the distribution of the machines as well as a variety of specialist options such as PDI and other inspections, general repairs, attachment installation, painting and modifications”
In order to support the activity going forward Van der Vlist has extended its storage capacity with a further 2500 sqm and will continue to invest in the Zeebrugge facility in 2012/2013 with an important increase of the workshop and indoor storage capacity.
