Van der Vlist Logistics have recently been working on a project that has involved moving excavators, wheeled loaders and forklifts to Tbilisi, Georgia. As with any transport to and from the Caucasus region, balancing a quality service with a realistic transport cost is not always easy! When you are moving a 46 ton excavator from Holland to this region, there are different laws relating to the road transport of large machinery in each country as well as many border controls to pass. In these cases, a Multimodal solution is always necessary.
And this is exactly what Van der Vlist Logistics did. The first decision was to move the machines to Georgia in parts, therefore keeping the costs down by ensuring the number of out of gauge or over sized pieces was kept to a minimum. The machines and their ancillary components were moved from the Van der Vlist Storage location to the port of departure by Van der Vlist low loaders and semi-trailers. The machines and the parts were then transhipped to flat racks and containers ready to be loaded to vessel destined for the Black Sea port of Poti. Once discharged, the pieces were loaded to the truck of one of Van der Vlists world-wide partners for the 330 km journey to the final delivery location.
This left just one piece of the puzzle to be completed. The machines were still in parts and needed to be assembled. The Van der Vlist Logistics team worked with a local technical assembly team to complete this final element. Once there they assembled, tested and the quality checked and inspected the machines at their final location, ready for the customers use.
The full project was planned and executed by one of the Van der Vlist Logistics Account Managers. This allows the customer to have just one point of contact at Van der Vlist while allowing the flexibility to engage many of the Van der Vlist Group activities to provide the most suitable solution.
