The Sandpiper finale

Van der Vlist recently facilitated the last journey of one of Boskalis’ Fallpipe vessels at it’s Terminal in Moerdijk.

Royal Boskalis Westminster N.V. is a leading global services provider operating in the dredging and earthmoving, maritime infrastructure and maritime services sectors all around the world.

The MV Sandpiper was built in 1971 and was converted in 1978 from a bulkcarrier to a fallpipe vessel, in order to be able to deposit stone accurately at great depths. The crew uses a remote-controlled system to position the end of the fallpipe just a few metres over the placement level. Then the stone is fed through the fallpipe while the vessel moves over the destination area, in order to flatten or consolidate areas for oil or gas pipes to be laid or protected.

Boskalis choose to use the Van der Vlist Terminal in Moerdijk to have the MV Sandpiper stripped from all parts which could be of use, varying from a big crawler crane up to the computers and small parts from the bridge before the vessel sailed off on it’s last journey to a demolition yard in Turkey.

Van der Vlist provided their quay over 5 days for the operation, and assisted with the stevedoring and in the dismantling of the various pieces discharged from the vessel to be put into storage on the 120 000m² capacity Moerdijk site, or moved on for alternative use or disposal.
