Van der Vlist recently attended the 15th Komatsu UK technological Olympics in Birtley, UK. The annual event showcases the high levels of skill required in the assembly of Komatsu products, and therefore why they are one of the leading manufacturers of construction and mining equipment. The winners for each category then go on to compete in Japan against the winners from the rest of the world.
The day was attended by Komatsu employees and their families, as well as suppliers and clients in the industry. Those present were given a tour of the factory, taking in all the different areas of production. There was an opportunity to try out some of the completed excavators, and a reconditioned 25 year old original Komatsu excavator was on display for all to see.
Van der Vlist was represented by Martien de Bruin. The Dutch engineer, who works in the Technical Services departments at Groot-Ammers, Holland, competed in the assembly class. The task was to assemble an example piece, which was specifically designed to test all of the skills which may be required in assembling a variety of different items of equipment and machinery, but in one single item.
De Bruin’s skill and speed meant he ended up in third place, out of 23 competitors, finishing behind two experienced Komatsu employees. Wilbert Van Koert- Managing director of Van der Vlist Technical Services commented “We are extremely proud of Martien’s achievement; finishing third amongst such expertise just shows that the skill of our Technical Services really is exceptional.”
