Last Saturday, 3 October, the Open Port Day in Moerdijk took place once again. This year featured a special first, as our terminal was transformed into the Services Square.
Every day, numerous organisations work to keep the Netherlands safe, accessible and running smoothly, including in and around the Moerdijk port area. During Open Port Day, visitors had the unique opportunity to experience these services and their work up close.
Among the participants were Defence, the Fire Brigade, Customs, the Royal Netherlands Sea Rescue Institution (KNRM), the Royal Netherlands Marechaussee, the Seaport Police and the Netherlands Pilots' Organisation, all showcasing their vehicles, equipment and interactive activities.
There was plenty for visitors to discover, experience and try out. Defence attracted significant interest with a climbing wall, various vehicles, rail equipment, the mobile front-end loading system developed in cooperation with Van der Vlist, and the vessel Southern Rock. At the Youth Fire Brigade stand, children had the opportunity to operate a fire hose themselves, while the Fire Brigade displayed a fireboat and several emergency vehicles. Customs demonstrated how smuggled goods are detected using their mobile scanning unit. The KNRM, Royal Netherlands Marechaussee, ambulance service and police invited visitors to take a closer look at their vessels and vehicles. The Netherlands Pilots' Organisation also provided insight into its vital role in safely guiding ships through the port.
In addition to the Services Square, Van der Vlist demonstrated the wide range of activities carried out in Moerdijk. On the terminal, visitors gained an insight into the logistics processes where road, rail and water transport come together. This multimodal approach was brought to life through the port cranes, the rail connection featuring our rail bolster on display, and the extensive quayside facilities. Our specialised and heavy transport operations, as well as our technical services, were also prominently featured. Among the exhibits were trucks carrying wind turbine blades and Defence cargo. In addition, a range of customer-owned machines were on display, highlighting the assembly, modification and inspection work that we carry out on a daily basis.
We look back on a wonderful day with strong public interest, enthusiastic visitors and many valuable encounters. We are grateful that so many people found their way to the Services Square and that the event proceeded safely, smoothly and with visible enthusiasm from those attending. Overall, it was a successful day that once again demonstrated the importance of cooperation and connection between the port community, emergency and public services, businesses and the people who depend on them.
