Terminal and port operations
Van der Vlist integrates water, rail and road into a single, efficient logistics solution. With strategically located terminals, including our trimodal terminal in Moerdijk, we optimise complex freight flows from the port to their final destination.
Our multimodal vision
International freight flows are becoming increasingly complex. Products are travelling greater distances, projects are becoming more extensive, and the demand for sustainable logistics solutions is growing. At Van der Vlist, we therefore look beyond a single mode of transport. We believe in the power of multimodal transport, which involves the optimal combination of water, rail and road.
Our sites are strategically located along key logistics corridors and connect to major transport routes. Thanks to direct links to waterways, rail and road, we can put together the most efficient transport solution for every consignment. In this way, we create flexibility, reliability and scalability within our customers’ supply chains, whilst at the same time reducing CO₂ emissions and traffic congestion.
A hub between the port and the final destination
When goods arrive at European seaports from overseas production sites, this often marks the start of the next stage of the logistics chain for Van der Vlist. From our terminal and port facilities, we handle the transhipment, temporary storage and onward distribution of project cargo, breakbulk, heavy haulage and other complex cargo flows.
With specialist teams, state-of-the-art handling and lifting equipment, and many years of experience, we ensure that every move is carried out safely, efficiently and with the utmost care.
Our trimodal terminal in Moerdijk
Our vision for multimodality comes together at our trimodal breakbulk terminal in Moerdijk, due to open in 2025. Here, water, rail and road converge at a single strategic location within the logistics corridor linking the Port of Rotterdam, the European hinterland and key industrial regions.
The terminal offers extensive facilities for transhipment between ships, trains and lorries, temporary secure indoor and outdoor storage – including customs-bonded goods – and project logistics support. Using specialised lifting and internal transport equipment, goods can be moved quickly and efficiently between the various modes of transport. This ensures maximum flexibility within our customers’ supply chains.
Key figures for Van der Vlist Moerdijk – Port & Terminal Logistics:
94,000 m² of terminal space
640-metre quay
Draught of approximately 8.5 metres
400-metre rail siding
In-house heavy-lift capacity of up to 150 tonnes
Our logistics network
Moerdijk is a key hub within Van der Vlist’s wider network. Our other sites also have facilities on the waterfront or are situated in the immediate vicinity of major rail and road links. For example, our site in Zeebrugge is located directly within the port, whilst our sites in Hull and Barcelona are situated near seaports. In addition, several sites are situated on (branches of) the River Rhine. This enables us to determine the most effective combination of transport modes for each project.
